MUSCLE-POWERED PUBLIC LAND USERS BANDING TOGETHER TO WORK FOR RESPONSIBLE LAND STEWARDSHIP AND USE

Welcome to Palisades!

Purpose:
Our primary goal is stewardship of the entire Rimrock/Palisades/Indian Canyon area, including all public lands within the approximate boundaries of Sunset Hwy on the South, Riverside State Park on the North and East, and Airway Heights on the West.

This will include trail planning and maintenance, park advocacy with regard to City Parks issues, involvement with the various agencies assisting in fire management, periodic cleanup activities, and a helpful, watchdog approach to all park users -- i.e. friendly toward non-trashers, non-poachers, non-dealers.

In addition, to assist other user groups in working toward accomplishment of their goals within other areas to enhance muscle-powered use, whether by help with marketing/grant writing/funding or physical help with trail work and building projects.

Finally, to spread the teachings of the "Leave No Trace" Outdoor Ethics program, both within our own area and by reaching out to other user groups to help work toward having clean, sustainable public lands everywhere.

We hope you'll join us.

At the request of the Board, the following data was prepared for a presentation last week at the October board meeting. It shows some pretty cool growth trends for our grass-roots total-volunteer work :)
Palisades website was created in January of 2001 and has evolved over time into the informative reference it is today.
Projects are dynamic and can be added by authorized volunteers. Currently the website follows 23 separate projects encompassing 193 articles. These are considered ‘inside’ news. In addition, there are 256 articles categorized as ‘non-neighborhood’ news. These items have all been added by your volunteers over the years. Additionally there are 9 articles of a historical nature, contributed by various authorities wishing to share their expertise.

Over the years, the website has garnered quite a bit of recognition and done considerable contribution to various neighborhood causes. One example is the fact that Mr. Baker was enamored with the website, the Palisades public work, and contributed money for development of a trail just south of his property. After his death, he donated the property to the Parks Department, something I believe the website and its information influenced.
Conservationfutures.org is a sub-site belonging to Palisades, created when there was no such resource for the Conservation Futures program. Although the County had a small site, it did not have the information and search engine ranking the Palisades site engendered. This sub-site was key in two of the election campaigns.
It will be possible to convert this database-driven website to the conventional html-type content and host it on other less-complicated servers. However to do this, each article will need to be re-written and the included photos re-linked manually and then all pages uploaded.
The website currently utilizes approximately 4G of storage space, although storage for Nichebox clients is unlimited. To run as-is on another server, it will require a MySQL database, a current version of PHP and Apache, and various other settings.
