MUSCLE-POWERED PUBLIC LAND USERS BANDING TOGETHER TO WORK FOR RESPONSIBLE LAND STEWARDSHIP AND USE

Welcome to Palisades!

Purpose:
Our primary goal is stewardship of the entire Rimrock/Palisades/Indian Canyon area, including all public lands within the approximate boundaries of Sunset Hwy on the South, Riverside State Park on the North and East, and Airway Heights on the West.

This will include trail planning and maintenance, park advocacy with regard to City Parks issues, involvement with the various agencies assisting in fire management, periodic cleanup activities, and a helpful, watchdog approach to all park users -- i.e. friendly toward non-trashers, non-poachers, non-dealers.

In addition, to assist other user groups in working toward accomplishment of their goals within other areas to enhance muscle-powered use, whether by help with marketing/grant writing/funding or physical help with trail work and building projects.

Finally, to spread the teachings of the "Leave No Trace" Outdoor Ethics program, both within our own area and by reaching out to other user groups to help work toward having clean, sustainable public lands everywhere.

We hope you'll join us.

2008-06-19 - North Central Cross Country Team Polishes Up Rock Eden
On Tuesday June 17,2008 more than 35 members of the North Central Cross County team arrived at 8am at the North Gate on Rimrock Dr with Coach Jon Knight, a Palisades resident and four adult volunteers.

Their job from 8am until 3:30pm was to scour this newly acquired addition to Palisades Park picking up an unbelievable amount of junk and debris.

They hauled railroad ties, piles and piles of discarded lumber, metal of all size and description, plastic pipes, buckets, welded wire fencing from all over the area to separate piles.

These piles were picked up the City Park Maintenance crews, recycled or taken to the Waste to Energy Plant.

The Park Crews thought they might pick up all this in one day...they changed their minds and figured it would take three days!

Others worked taking down the barb wire fencing and posts along Rimrock Dr. They rolled the barb wire and stacked it alongside the metal posts that were pulled.

Still other took loppers and saws supplied by Riverside State Park to trim lower branches and remove dog hair pine. This effort reduces the fire danger.

They broke apart a large number of staw bales and scattered the straw which will decompose and add nutrients to the grasses and wildflowers.

This cross country crew was the first place 3A team at state the past two years and finished 2nd in the two years before that. Last year they finished 6th in the nation in the Nike Team National meet in Portland. They have yet to come out with this fall's rankings but the talk around the web is that NC will begin ranked in the top 3 in the nation.

Palisades is very grateful and proud of the 260 hours of volunteer work that was donated to City Parks that day by this crew. They will be the leaders our society in years to come.
