MUSCLE-POWERED PUBLIC LAND USERS BANDING TOGETHER TO WORK FOR RESPONSIBLE LAND STEWARDSHIP AND USE

Welcome to Palisades!

Purpose:
Our primary goal is stewardship of the entire Rimrock/Palisades/Indian Canyon area, including all public lands within the approximate boundaries of Sunset Hwy on the South, Riverside State Park on the North and East, and Airway Heights on the West.

This will include trail planning and maintenance, park advocacy with regard to City Parks issues, involvement with the various agencies assisting in fire management, periodic cleanup activities, and a helpful, watchdog approach to all park users -- i.e. friendly toward non-trashers, non-poachers, non-dealers.

In addition, to assist other user groups in working toward accomplishment of their goals within other areas to enhance muscle-powered use, whether by help with marketing/grant writing/funding or physical help with trail work and building projects.

Finally, to spread the teachings of the "Leave No Trace" Outdoor Ethics program, both within our own area and by reaching out to other user groups to help work toward having clean, sustainable public lands everywhere.

We hope you'll join us.

Winterfest Jan 10-11: Free events + volunteers needed
Winterfest is occurring this coming weekend at 49 Degrees North, both days (Sat-Sun, Jan 10-11) at 49’s cross-country trails and on the mountain. Primary sponsors are Mountain Gear, 49 Degrees North, Spokane City Parks and Rec, and EWU’s EPIC program. You’re all invited to participate in the following activities:

Free demos and lessons for skate and classical cross-country skiing, plus free X-country ski tours
Free snowshoe demos and tours
Free demos for AT and tele gear (requires lift ticket)
Fun races for cross-country, both skating and classic-style
Fun races for Tele and AT (requires fee, but includes a discounted lift ticket)
Winter safety and avalanche beacon info
Lots of fun activites including a BBQ, a bonfire, a band, and night tours
Lots of prizes to be given away
This is a great opportunity to demo skis and equipment, to learn, and have fun.

Volunteers are needed for both the Nordic and “Slope-side” (on-mountain) events: a 4-hour shift allows you to ski for free (lift ticket) that day, and a 6-hour shift gives you a lift ticket for another, full day. Please contact me ASAP if you’d like to volunteer.

Event schedules are listed below for each of the Nordic and Slope-side activities. I’ve spoken with some of you about this; please excuse this late notice for what promises to be a great weekend. This is the first year the sponsors have combined separate events like Demo Days, the old Teledaze and Hill Climb races, and free instruction and winter safety classes all into one big weekend of what will continue to be an annual event. So get in on the first year of what in the future will be a much more publicized festival, and take advantage of all Winterfest has to offer!

You’re welcome to reply; wishing you all the best this coming weekend.
